Firefox, Thunderbird, and Sunbird Packages for Solaris 8-10 for SPARC and x86, Firefox 3-30 and Thunderbird 3-24 for OpenSolaris and Solaris 10
These packages are provided “Free of Charge” as a convenience to our visitors. They are the ONLY packages in our repository that are not compiled by us, and were contributed by External Offshore developers in East Asia. We can provide our own versions of Firefox 11 that has been compiled by us in the USA as a bundle complete with its dependencies and install script. If this is of interest please submit a Package Request for a quotation.
Thunderbird and Firefox are labeled for Solaris 8 and 10, but the Solaris 8 packages should also work on Solaris 9. (The Solaris 10 package will not work for Solaris 9.) Sunbird is for Solaris 10 only. Firefox 3-30 and Thunderbird 3-24 are available for OpenSolaris and Solaris 10. Note that these packages are compressed with bzip2. Packages for bunzip2 are available from our packages archive if your system does not already have bzip2 installed.
Warning – it had been reported and we have confirmed that version 29.0 of Firefox can fail with a core dump. One quick solution is to backup the user’s .mozilla directory and let Firefox create a new one. This has the problem of not retaining the user’s bookmarks etc. You may want to update to 29.0.1 or 30.0, which we hope has corrected the issue.
The Firefox and Thunderbird packages install the programs in /opt/sfw subdirectories via the following steps, run as root. For example:
pkgadd -d firefox-30.0.en-US.solaris-10-fcs-i386-pkg
Some users have reported that if the directory /opt/sfw is actually a link to some other directory, when you run pkgadd to install these packages, it will delete the link and create a new /opt/sfw directory. If this happens, you will need to move the Firefox files to your other directory and relink /opt/sfw to it. Alternatively, for Firefox 30.0, 29.0.1, 28.0, 27.0.1, 26.0, 25.0.1, 24.0. 23.0.1, 22.0, 21.0, 20.0.1, 19.0.2, 18.0.1, 17.0.1, 16.0.2, 15.0.1, 14.0.1, 13.0.1, 12.0, 11.0, 10.0.2, 9.0.1, 8.0.1, 7.0.1, 6.0.2, 5.0, 4.0.1, and 3.6.18 or Thunderbird 3.1.11, 5.0, 6.0.2, 7.0.1, 8.0, 9.0.1, 10.0.2, 11.0, 12.0, 13.0.1, 14.0, 15.0.1 16.0.2, 17.0.8, and 24.7.0, you can use the tarred versions of the packages found in our package archive. Some users have found that it is easier to use the tarred form of the files. For example, if you untar a Firefox tarred package in /opt/sfw, it will create a firefox subdirectory there and you can run firefox from that directory with ./firefox.
When we install Sunbird, we put the appropriate file into /opt/sfw and bunzip2 and untar it. It creates an /opt/sfw/sunbird directory. /opt/sfw/sunbird/sunbird starts the program. You can choose a different installation location if you wish.
